Thoroughgood is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in North Virginia Beach, where it is nestled between Chicks Beach and the Lynnhaven River.  Two schools are located within the community – Thoroughgood Elementary and Independence Middle School which are both sought after by parents as excellent Virginia Beach schools and because they are both within safe walking distance of virtually anywhere in the neighborhood.   The Bayside Recreation Center is located just minutes away and offers fun for the whole family.  The community is composed of single family homes, mostly built in the 1950s, however Thoroughgood Estates is a newer part of the community built in the 80s.  There are also various lots throughout the community where newer homes have been built.  With the Lynnhaven River  bordering the southern/southeast part of Thoroughgood there are many beautiful waterfront properties located in the community, many which offer nice acreage.  Close to the highways, the beach, the airport and Town Center, Thoroughgood is centrally located in Virginia Beach – yet at the same time this community gives a country, pastoral feeling with its extra large treed lots, quiet streets and family atmosphere.

Located within the neighborhood is the Adam Thoroughgood House, circa 1719, one of the oldest houses from early Colonial period which provides insight into the of the kind of  lifestyle lived by the gentry in Princess Anne County. Restored in 1957, today it is a museum and is open to the public.
